We are very excited to invite your pupils to join us in celebrating both the art of photography, and the town of Barnsley, in our upcoming inaugural photography festival. Barnsley FOTO Festival 2026 is hosting exhibitions and workshops across Barnsley; from the Jerwood and Barnsley Young Photographer Awards at Barnsley Civic, to exhibitions from Leeds Arts University and Barnsley Collective.
We need you to help us create one of our key pieces of artwork. We want to collect a variety of artworks from children across Barnsley. These pieces will build a large collage that will be exhibited in the heart of our historic town; Barnsley Markets. To support pupils in taking part in this wider artwork, we have built four avenues to explore.
These tasks are to be completed using any materials available to you. Children could use pencils and paper, paints, materials and glue, stitchwork – but photography must be at the core of the artwork. If pupils don’t have access to a camera, use images as the foundation of artwork through collage or other abstract avenues. The aim is to gain a picture of Barnsley today, through the eyes of the young people living in the area. How do they see the world?
Not all tasks need to be completed. This plan has been created with all children in mind. We want everyone to have access and to receive a really eclectic collection of images.
Once complete, can you please complete a submission form and have all artworks ready for collection on Wednesday the 11th of February. We will arrange a specific time of collection with each school, closer to the time. If this date is not appropriate, please let us know.
All final pieces will be printed and used as part of a wider collage that will be exhibited in Barnsley Market as part of Barnsley’s inaugural FOTO Festival.
This project works in conversation with the workshop sessions, Exploration of Britishness, located at Barnsley Civic, hosted by Kelly Rankin, and would not be possible without the support from both Barnsley Council and Photoworks.
